Encourage Your Child’s Imagination and Creativity with a “No Battery Birthday”
|
Our Guest Blogger Amity Hook-Sopko at www.greengiftsguide.com recommends that "No Battery Toys" are not only better for your child, they’re better for the planet too. Helping to foster creativity and imagination, these toys help a child progress at his or her own pace. It’s good to know that what’s safe for your child is also safe for Mother Earth.

Remember that thing you played with all the time when you were a kid? It was with you from sun up till sun down. You didn’t buy it at any toy store… it was free. And it’s what could turn an empty box into a dollhouse or a broom handle into a light saber.
If your child is willing to forego gifts, ask guests to bring dog or cat toys for your local animal shelter, or another cause kids enjoy supporting. If you’re looking for a unique party experience, have the kids gather to donate the supplies so they can see the difference their gifts make. |

This article must be read by every parent especially new parents who fall in the trap of false marketing for battery toys. I was so naive when my first child was born. I used to be attracted towards every single battery toy in the market. I remember when one of the preschool teacher told me to go for "no battery toys" as they do not build any skill set. And my reaction was "What, how will the child enjoy, toy will be so boring!" I was so ignorant, since then came a long way. |

What an interesting idea! As my kids get older it seems the toys that require batteries keep increasing. We are trying to stick with outside toys like skateboards, bikes, roller-blades etc... Inside we like to do arts and crafts and baking. I can handle the no battery concept-but what about all the presents from friends? I like the idea of asking them to bring gifts for shelters or other charitable organizations. We'll have to work on this one! Thanks for the great post! |

These ideas are awesome! It seems like so many toys *do* require batteries which makes me sad because you are so right - let's give our kiddos the gift of creativity! The amount of waste is terrible and it's not only healthier for our planet to do the "no battery" thing, but for our kids too. What's great too is that you don't even have to buy a bunch of stuff - homemade play dough is great and easy, cooking with kids, melting old crayons for jumbo new ones and so much more! This is a great post :) |

Oh yes! I sooo remember those days. Me and my sister would play "restaurant" or "school." In restaurant we would line up our dolls and serve them "food" and take orders. For school would use our books to read to the dolls and teach them things and of course, let them play during recess! LOVE THE NO BATTERY BDAY idea! Great post, Amity! |
