Never been to a cookie swap party? Well now is the perfect time to get in with this modern twist to an old favorite. Winter is the perfect season for gathering with friends old and new to celebrate with, well, cookies and cocktails.

Why a Cookie Swap?

Because they’re fun and yummy! Cookie swaps have been occurring for decades – whether exchanged with your neighbors or at a local community gathering. Although most people relate these to the holiday season, you can tailor an event for your own personal cookie swap meet any time of year.

What better way to kick it up a notch than to add cocktails to the “mix” and really liven up the party? Beverages can be make-your-own or custom-tailored to the evening’s theme. If you’re feeling adventurous, you could even serve cookie-themed cocktails!

Organize the Troops

Let your party-goers know how many treats to bring to the party. A good rule of thumb is 3-6 cookies per trade. So if there are ten guests, each guest should bring 30-60 cookies to trade, and they will each bring home nine new cookie types to enjoy. Gingerbread, snickerdoodle, decorated sugar cookie, (thin) mint, and oatmeal cookies are some of the cookie types that you can bring for the cookie swap.

Traditional cookie swaps of the past focused on recipe exchanges with the trade of the cookies, but in today’s world that’s just not realistic for most of us. A trendy and eco-friendly option is organic cookies – free from artificial colors, many are even sourced from sustainable farms making them the ultimate in healthy, environmentally conscious alternatives. Some guests may prefer to bring cookies to decorate. Some guests may prefer to bring candy or chocolates over cookies. Just make sure everyone leaves their troubles at the door.

Keep Your Party Green

Personalized or themed wine or martini glasses are a perfect party favor to send home with your guests, and they won’t clutter up a landfill with the plastic cups that everyone always loses at a party. You can use paper straws for sipping your libations, reusable muslin or organza bags for dispersing cookies and your party can remain all-around eco-friendly.

Don’t be afraid to use those snowflake-shaped Christmas ornaments, plates and lights to set the tone. Sure you already packed them away, but get them out and enjoy them one more time before they sit in the attic all year.
